SUTHERLAND: LIGHT, SHADOW AND STONE

A Fine Art Study Series by Michael Connell

Sutherland: Light, Shadow and Stone is a twelve plate fine art study series documenting the stark, ancient geography of the Scottish Highlands’ northernmost region. Utilizing a distinct chiaroscuro approach, the series contrasts deep structural shadows against pockets of sudden, dramatic natural illumination. The images isolate the raw physical weight of coastal cliffs, glacial remnants and historic stone structures, capturing a permanent sense of stillness despite the wild, rapidly shifting weather conditions characteristic of the region.
