The Physical Medium

A photograph does not truly exist as artwork until it takes physical form. The screen is a proofing stage; the final expression requires a precise combination of paper chemistry, ink density and careful proofing and calibration.

The Paper Base

Standard digital printing typically relies on smooth, lightweight wood-pulp papers. For mainline limited editions the studio standard is Fotospeed Natural Soft Textured Bright White 315gsm Cotton Rag paper.

  • Composition: Made from 100% cotton linters, entirely acid-free and lignin-free.

  • Archival Stability: Naturally buffered with calcium carbonate to resist atmospheric acid damage, meeting international gallery and archival standards.

  • Physical Structure: The heavy 315gsm paper provides structural sheet rigidity, while the gentle, unpressed surface texture prevents harsh glare and breaks up direct light reflections.

  • Tonal Definition: The specialized bright-white base provides a clean tonal anchor point that enhances deep contrast, shadow separation and fine details.

Ink Chemistry & Tonal Range

Rather than utilizing traditional dye-based inks, the studio prints exclusively with the Canon LUCIA PRO II pigment system.

  • Micro-encapsulated pigments: These inks consist solid microscopic colorant particles suspended in a liquid fluid.

  • Deep Black Density (Dmax): By coordinating the specific absorption properties of the Fotospeed cotton rag with dual formulation matt black and photo black ink channels, the ink achieves an exceptionally high Dmax profile. This translates to pure, non-reflective shadows and deep tonal graduation that maintains structural detail even in deep shadow values, especially suited to Michael’s photography style.

Edition Integrity & Scarcity

A strict, permanent cap is enforced on the physical production of each composition. Scarcity is managed under a fixed, zero-loophole ledger.

  • Fixed Edition Structure from Release: Once released, the composition’s declared tiers and their maximum sequence limits constitute the composition’s complete lifetime production structure. Additional editions will not be created for any reason including (but not limited to) changes to presentation, additional sizes or additional substrates.

  • No Parallel Variants: Near-identical or similar exposures, alternate color treatments and monochrome interpretations are not used to create additional editions of the same composition.

  • Artist Proof Boundaries: Production and calibration proofs are permanently marked and are excluded from commercial circulation. Any retained archival proofs are documented at release and are capped at a maximum of two per composition. These are retained exclusively for structural studio evaluation, institutional exhibition, permanent archival storage and other non-commercial purposes. They are never released directly into the standard commercial stream.

  • No digital licensing: Images entering the Limited Edition Registry are not subsequently offered as downloadable files, NFTs or independent digital editions.

  • Price Integrity: Once publicly released, the acquisition price of a limited edition is never reduced. Pricing may progress as an edition approaches exhaustion, but released work is never discounted, cleared or liquidated.

Edition Authenticity

Every Limited Edition print released is permanently bound to a dual-layered security system.

  • The Certificate: Each print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity featuring a serialized, tamper-proof security hologram.

  • The Match: A second, identical serialized hologram is permanently affixed to the reverse side of the physical print.

Receiving The Print

Packaging

  • The Certificate of Authenticity and the print are shipped separately for two reasons.

    • Security: If intercepted en route, the person intercepting should not be able to obtain both the print and the certificate.

    • Protection: Because of its size, the print is shipped rolled. To arrive in optimum condition, the certificate should be kept flat.

You will normally receive the Certificate of Authenticity first.

  • The print is shipped sandwiched between acid-free glassine (front) and acid-free tissue (rear), rolled loosely in a plastic sleeve inside an oversized heavy duty cardboard box.

  • The box opens along a long side using a pull tab. Please do not use a box cutter, knife or any other form of blade to open the box.

  • After opening, please leave the print rolled in its plastic sleeve for at least four hours to acclimatize. A pair of white cotton gloves is included in the box and should be used to remove the sleeve and for any further handling of the print which can be damaged by contact with human skin. The plastic sleeve is for moisture protection during shipping only and should be discarded immediately.

  • The tissue and glassine in which the print is sandwiched are suitable for long-term archival storage. Framing and archival guidelines are included with the Certificate of Authenticity.

Experience Period

Every standard acquisition includes a 14-day experience period. If the work is not right for you once you have experienced it in person, then you can notify the studio who will arrange and fund its return, together with its Certificate of Authenticity following Limited Edition protection procedures. The full purchase price, including any shipping and tax, will be refunded upon receipt and inspection of the returned, destroyed work and its Certificate of Authenticity.

The Preservation Pledge

“A fine art print is an enduring physical heirloom. Because of this Michael Connell Photography guarantees a comprehensive 10-year replacement plan for all registered acquisitions. If an original sheet is stolen or accidentally damaged, stained, improperly framed or suffers environmental damage within ten years of purchase, the studio will completely reproduce, inspect and hand-sign an identical replacement print featuring your original sequence tracking for a standard fee of 25% of the original purchase price.”

To ensure absolute tactile consistency the studio maintains a dedicated, climate-controlled vault of original Fotospeed Natural Soft Textured Bright White 315gsm paper reserved exclusively for replacement editions.

If studio printing hardware or pigment ink matrices evolve over the 10-year term, replacements will be rendered onto the archived paper using the closest contemporary museum-grade equivalent technology (such as the direct successor to the Canon LUCIA PRO II line) to meet or exceed the original print’s archival benchmarks.

To protect the integrity of our Limited Editions for all collectors, replacement remains strictly conditional upon the physical return and studio destruction of the damaged print and of the original Certificate of Authenticity, or of a notified statement and verified proof of complete destruction (for example insurance, fire, or police reports).

In the event that Michael is no longer physically able to personally inspect, hand sign or execute a replacement edition over the 10-year term, the studio’s designated Artistic Estate will fulfill the reproduction using the archived master files, the original paper vault inventory and contemporary museum-grade technology. Instead of a live graphite signature, these specific archival requirements will be permanently stamped with a Michael Connell Estate Verification Seal, cross referenced and fully authenticated under a secondary security log within the Hahnemühle MyArtRegistry.
