The Lewisian Edge
Plate 7 from the Sutherland: Light, Shadow and Stone Collection
Location: Scourie Coastline, Northwest Sutherland
The Scourie Coastline is beautiful in any conditions, but in this photograph the weather became part of the structure of the scene. Sheets of rainfall moved across the Atlantic while broken cloud divided the coast into alternating areas of light and shadow, picking out areas of wet Lewisian Gneiss - some of the oldest exposed rock in Europe - while other parts of the shoreline slipped into shadow. Against that changing weather, the fractured Lewisian shoreline provided a second, more permanent structure.
