Lochan An Ais
Plate 10 from the Sutherland: Light, Shadow and Stone collection
Location: Elphin, Assynt
This was the most carefully planned photograph in the collection. I scouted the position in daylight, recorded the exact location and returned after dark, when Stac Pollaidh was no longer visible to the eye. I knew where it should sit in the gap between Cul Beag to the left and An Laogh and Cul Mor to the right, and several long exposures were needed to gather the remaining light. When the image emerged the small distant silhouette of Stac Pollaidh became the essential element of the whole composition.
